What is Craniosacral Therapy?
Craniosacral Therapy is a very gentle yet highly effective form of therapy, which aims to rebalance the person on multiple levels - including physical, mental and emotional.
The concept of the craniosacral system was first acknowledged and explored by the osteopath William Sutherland over 100 years ago. His investigations revealed an independent rhythmic motion of the tissues of the body (unrelated to respiration or heart beat), the unrestricted and balanced functioning of which was directly linked to health on all levels.
At the core of this movement is the rhythmic fluctuation of the fluid surrounding the brain and spinal cord (cerebrospinal fluid). This has a direct influence on the ultimate control system of the body, the central nervous system (CNS). Every cell in the body, including the musculoskeletal, vascular, lymphatic, endocrine and respiratory systems are connected to and controlled by the CNS. Any abnormalities in any one of these systems can therefore affect and influence the craniosacral system, and vice versa.
Craniosacral treatment focuses on sensing this subtle rhythmic motion, through gentle palpation of the cranial bones, the sacrum (tail bone), and other structures related to production and functioning of the cerebrospinal fluid. The aim of treatment, is to identify and release any restrictions, blockages or imbalances in the system and create a balanced state of functioning (true health) and an overall sense of well-being.
Common causes for imbalances include; physical injuries, psychological and emotional stresses, toxicity and birth trauma. The memory of unresolved experiences become imprinted in the tissues (cellular memory), and it is often these blockages that underlie patterns of disease and dysfunction. Resolution through treatment allows the person to move on to a higher level of health in all aspects.
